A man from Forks Township, Pennsylvania, entered the county tax collector’s office and paid his entire $7,143.54 property tax bill in one-dollar bills. The stunt was a form of protest since he claimed that the money was being “stolen” from him as he does not want to pay for services that he claims do not benefit his family. In particular, the man homeschooled his three children and complained that he shouldn’t be required to pay taxes to fund the public school system when he doesn’t use the public system. He certainly isn’t the first to make this argument but it begs the question whether taxes should be assessed against only those families who enroll children in public school. Because having an educated citizentry benefits everyone, there is little to no chance that any steps will be taken to exempt home schooled children (or families without children) from the local taxes.
